FAQ's

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DRIVERS EDUCATION

Q: WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO TAKE DRIVERS EDUCATION?

A: Your child can take Segment I as early as 14 yrs / 8 mos – provided they attain that age by the first start of the first class. Your child must be 14 yrs / 9 months in order to receive their white driving permit. Students must complete 24 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind the wheel training. Classroom hours are not considered part of the drive schedule-which during the school year will be done between the hours of 2:30-6:30 M-F and flexible hours on Saturday and Sundays.

Once your child has been on the learners permit for a minimum of 90 days and has completed 30 hours of drive time, they can return to take Segment II - Your son/daughter must be on the learners permit for a minimum of 180 days as required by the State. YOUR SON/DAUGHTER IS WELCOME TO TAKE SEGMENT 2 WITH US EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY HAVE TAKEN SEGMENT I FROM ANOTHER DRIVING SCHOOL.

Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS?

A:SEGMENT I    Students Birth Certificate, Payment for the class, and the Students Registation Form (If you haven't sent it in already)

SEGMENT II  Students Permit, Driving log, and Payment for the class.

Q: WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE WILL MY CHILD BE DRIVING AND IS IT SAFE?

A: Around Town Driving School uses a 2012 CHRYSLER 200 and a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. You can be assured your child is in one of the safest vehicles on the road. We do not promote the concept of a “sports car” to excite your son/daughter. We believe in safety behind the wheel at all times. Our cars are meticulously maintained with monthly service checks on tires, brakes, alignments, oil changes, etc.

Q: DO YOU PICK UP OR DROP OFF STUDENTS AT HOME/SCHOOL?

A: During school hours, we typically will pick up the student from either the old or East high school for their drive time at 2:30. Student’s will almost always drive themselves home at the end of their drive time, however circumstances with traffic, location and time could require students to be picked up at the driving school. When there is a need or special request, Around Town Driving School, will always go the extra mile to try and help out the parent/student with transportation.

Q: WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS EXTRA DRIVING TIME?

A: Not all students learn to drive after 6 hours of required drive time. In the event your child needs additional driving time, Around Town will provide an additional hour of driving* at NO COST to the parent once the class ends(*this offer is only valid for students who completed Segment I with Around Town DS AND are within 30 days of completing Segment I).

Q: MY CHILD NEEDS MORE PRACTICE DRIVING. WHATS THE COSTS FOR PRACTICE LESSONS?

A: If you have a son or daughter who needs more practice behind the wheel, we provide practice drives geared towards helping them pass the Michigan Road Test and to overall just feel more comfortable behind the wheel. Each lesson takes approx. 1 hour. The COST is $10 per lesson for anyone under 18 but the student must have their State of Michigan Permit.

Please keep in mind that Availability for practice drives is limited due to our ongoing monthly classes BUT we will do our best to work with your schedules.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS GO OVER DURING A DRIVING LESSON?

A: During each lesson, the instructor will take them for a drive that includes* pratice on the freeway, roundabouts, and parking

(*providing that the weather and traffic is cooperating).

DO YOU GUYS PROVIDE DRIVING LESSONS FOR ADULTS?

A: Yes! We do provide adult ( 18 and older) driving lessons. The cost is $40 a lesson. Please call the driving school for available times and dates.

(Adults must have a valid permit issued by the SOS before they can be taking out for a driving lesson)

Q: HOW MANY DRIVERS DO YOU USE?

A: We have 4 driving instructors employed by Around Town DS. All our instructors are certified by the Michigan Secretary of State and all must maintain a clean driving record.

ALL our instructors go through a background check every 2 years. This is done, most importanly, to insure the safety of your children but also to give everyone the peace of mind knowing that Around Town instructors ARE and WILL continue to be the very best instructors for your child.

We have taught Segment I & II to over 7500 students, all who live in or around the South Lyon Community School district. As mentioned, we live in the Salem/South Lyon area, and all the majority of our needs for the driving school, i.e. gas, school supplies, pizza, car maintenance, advertising are done through our local SL businesses.

In addition, Around Town Driving School PROUDLY contributes Thousands of dollars to help out variuos activities such as our local, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, swim/dive teams and the drama club for South Lyon High and/or South Lyon East.
